Assignment #2: Muslim Diversity Slideshow Grading Rubric
Assignment Instructions and Expectations:
- Create a Muslim Diversity Slideshow using iPhoto.
- If needed, refer to the following website for more instructions on how to use iPhoto: http://www.apple.com/ilife/iphoto/#new-slideshows
- Use the Muslim Population Report as a reference while searching for photos of Muslims online
- Use a search engine such as Google Images to find your photos. In the search box, you can type phrases such as Russian Muslims, African American Muslim Women, or Islam in China.
- Be aware of photos that seem to be discriminatory or offensive. Mainstream media tends to focus on negative aspects of Islam, so most likely the first photos to pop up would not be very inviting. An advice would be to look through all pages of your search results until you find something suitable.
- Sometimes, searches that include the words Ramadan or Eid could yield better results.
- The purpose of your slideshow is to illustrate the diversity of Muslims. You should therefore aim to include pictures from as many countries/ethnicities as you can.
- You should have a minimum of seven photos.
- A smart idea would be to focus on the countries which surprised you in the report you were handed in class.
- Be creative in your effects and choice of music.
- You will be graded on the level of diversity in your photos, creativity of song choice, and creativity of effects and presentation. The slideshow is expected to be fluid and visually appealing.
- Your slideshow should reflect an understanding of the material discussed in class.
- The slideshows are to be submitted next week, but will be viewed in the next Lunch Bag Seminar.
- This is an individual assignment.

Assignment #3: Media Critique Grading Rubric
Assignment Instructions and Expectations:
- On YouTube, search for the 'Aladdin Arabian Nights' song in different languages. You can use phrases such as 'Aladdin Arabian Nights Finnish subs/translation'. Substitute Finnish with Portoguese or any other language. There is a good number of dubbed versions of this song on YouTube, and a few of them have subtitles.
- Write down the lyrics of the dubbed version of your choice (try to have at least two dubbed versions) and compare and contrast them to the English lyrics. How are they similar and in what ways do they differ. How drastic is the difference? How close is the similarity?
- The Arab American community has protested against the racist lyrics of Aladdin's 'Arabian Nights' song and won their case. The lyrics were changed, but not in their entirety. Search for Aladdin Arabian Nights on YouTube and you will get the new version (the older one is much more difficult to find).
- Listen closely to the lyrics. What are the changes that have been made? Is there anything that strikes you as being strange?
- This assignment is to be written in either essay of point format, and should be no less than 750 words. You will be referring to your notes in a future assignment, so make sure they are well thought out.
