ISLAMIC VALUES
60 MINUTES
OBJECTIVES:
- To become familiar with the values promoted by the Quran and the Prophet which are almost never mentioned in the media.
- To appreciate the importance of these beliefs and values to Muslims
LOCATION: Computer lab
MATERIALS:
- Computers and Internet access (one computer for a group of three students should be adequate)
- Overhead projector connected to a computer and with Internet access
- Personal Journals, pens or pencils
PROCEDURE:
5 minutes:
Ask students the following question:
- What comes to your mind when you hear the phrase 'Islamic Values'?
20 minutes:
Ask students to log on to the Inspired by Muhammad website at the following link: http://www.inspiredbymuhammad.com/social_justice.php
- Divide students into groups of two of three, in such a way that there is a group assigned for each of the following eight values: Social Justice, Environment, Charity, Education, Healthcare, Animal Welfare, Human Rights, and Coexistence. Students can choose which value they want to cover. [Note that the section on Women's Rights will be covered in a future lesson].
- Students read the section corresponding to the value of their choice, and watch the video(s) embedded in that section.
- They should take notes about what they read and see in their Personal Journal.
20 minutes:
Class discussion, moderated by the teacher
- Name the value you just read about and three aspects of it that touched you, impressed you, or surprised you.
- Have you ever heard of these Muslim values in any of the media sources you are exposed to?
- How do these values compare to the so-called Muslim values that are perpetually being portrayed by the media?
15 minutes:
Briefly explain the next assignment and do a Prezi demonstration. You can familiarize yourself with Prezi before this class by clicking here or going to their website: http://prezi.com/ and watching the online tutorials.
- Physically demonstrate, using the overhead projector in the computer lab, how to create an account and perform basic tasks with Prezi.
- Encourage students to look at the different online tutorials in order to gain more knowledge on how to use Prezi creatively.
- Show students how to download a YouTube video using KEEPVID, and how to edit it in iMovie

Assignment Instructions and Expectations:
- Create a 5 minute Prezi presentation explaining the value you covered in your reading
- You are encouraged to use embedded videos. Your clip should be a section of your choice from the video corresponding to your chosen value on the Inspired by Muhammad website. All these videos can be found on YouTube if you type Inspired by Muhammad in the search box.
- Use http://keepvid.com/ to download your video
- Edit your clip in iMovie
- Your presentation should include pictures, videos, and short phrases.
- The presentation should be comprehensible without the need for a presenter.
- This is a group assignment, and is due next class
- Screening will take place during our next Lunch Bag Seminar.
- You will be assessed on creativity, accuracy of information, richness of content, aesthetic choices, critical analysis of mainstream media choices, and general flow of the presentation.
- Your presentation should reflect an understanding of all the aspects dealt with since the beginning of this unit.
