ISLAMIC ART, CIVILIZATION, AND CULTURE

OBJECTIVES:
- To appreciate the important contributions Islam made to the arts and modern science
- To understand that both historic and contemporary Islam have a rich cultural heritage which reflects the diversity of Muslims around the world
LOCATION: Computer Lab
MATERIALS:
- Macintosh computers
- Overhead projector connected to a Macintosh computer
- Personal Journals, pens or pencils
- Digital cameras
PROCEDURE:
15 minutes:
Demonstration:
- Demonstrate to students how to use a digital camera. Some explanation of the types of shots they can take, as well as different kinds of zoom, is also required.
- Demonstrate how to upload photos on iMovie and how to add effects, titles, music, and voice over. Students should also be shown how to upload their PSA's on YouTube
5 minutes:
Discuss the homework readings on Islam and the sciences.

HOMEWORK:
Students log on to the Internet
- Browse the Islamic Arts and Architecture website which is available at this link: http://islamic-arts.org/
- Look through the sections on Architecture, Art & Style, and Calligraphy
- Choose photos to include in your final assignment, which will be a ten minute documentary on Islam and Islamophobia. The assignment guidelines and rubric will be distributed next class.
HOMEWORK:
- Continue browsing the Islamic Arts and Architecture website: http://islamic-arts.org/ and take notes on whatever catches your attention in it.
- Listen to at least two of the following songs. Write down your impressions in your Personal Journal.
